Class 1 Digital ID Installation
A Class 1 Digital ID can be used for different purposes such as securing POP email or for client authentication to specific web sites.
The initial installation needs to take place into the web browser on the machine the enrollment takes place from.
* Important: For this process to work successfully, you must use the same computer, browser and login that was used during enrollment for the certificate.
Internet Explorer 5.x or higher

- Shortly after completing enrollment, you will receive an e-mail from the Digital ID Center at the e-mail address you entered in the enrollment form. It will contain instructions for installing the Digital ID.
- Within the email are two important items:
* Personal Identification Number (PIN)
* URL to download the ID
- As the instructions will mention, copy the PIN number
- Go to the URL specified in the email
- Paste the copied PIN number into the field requesting the PIN
- Click Submit
- The next page will indicate "Step 4 of 4: Install Digital ID"
- Click Install
- A prompt may appear, "This website is adding one or more certificates to this computer. Allowing an untrusted Web site to update
your certificates is a security risk. The Web site could install certificates you do not trust, which could allow programs that you do not trust to
run on this computer and gain access to your data.
Do you want this program to add the certificates now? Click Yes if you trust the Web site. Otherwise click No."
- Click Yes
- A message should appear indicating successful installation
Verify Installation
- Open Internet Explorer
- Go to Tools > Internet Options > Content tab
- Click Certificates
- The Certificates window will open and display
- Locate the Personal tab
- Your Digital ID should be displayed in the list
- Double click on the entry to view the ID's details
Firefox 2.0 or higher 
- Shortly after completing enrollment, you should receive an e-mail from the Digital ID Center within the hour at the e-mail address you entered in the enrollment form. It will contain instructions for installing the Digital ID.
- Within the email are two important items:
* Personal Identification Number (PIN)
* URL to download the ID
- As the instructions will mention, copy the PIN number
- Go to the URL specified in the email
- Paste the copied PIN number into the field requesting the PIN
- Click Submit
- A message will appear indicating, "Your personal certificate has been installed. You should keep a backup copy of the certificate."
Verify Installation
- Open Firefox
- Go to Tools > Options
- At the top of the Options window, select the Advanced icon
- Select the Encryption tab
- Click View Certificates
- The Certificate Manager window will open
- Your ID should be located under the Your Certificates tab
- Highlight the certificate and click View to see it's details
Netscape 7.0 or higher
- Shortly after completing enrollment, you should receive an e-mail from the Digital ID Center within the hour at the e-mail address you entered in the enrollment form.
It will contain instructions for installing the Digital ID.
- Within the email are two important items:
- Personal Identification Number (PIN)
- URL to download the ID
- As the instructions will mention, copy the PIN number
* Note: it is important that the PIN number not contain any blank spaces
- Go to the URL specified in the email
* Note: this URL can vary depending on weather your enrollment was with Internet Explorer or Netscape browser.
- Paste the copied PIN number into the field requesting the PIN
- Click Submit
- The next page should appear indicating successful installation
Verify Installation
- Open Netscape Browser
- Go to Edit > Preferences
- Under Category, click Privacy & Security > Certificates > Manage Certificates
- The Certificate Manager window will open
- The Digital ID should be located under the Your Certificates tab
- Highlight the certificate and click View to see it's details
Mac Mail (Apple Mail)
You must use the same machine and using Safari browser 3.1 or highe that you used to enroll for you certificate.
- Open your 'Safari' browser and clear cache. Click Safari > Empty Cache... > Empty.
- Go to your approval email and click on the link to pickup your certificate. Ensure that the link opens with 'Safari'.
- Enter the PIN on the approval email and click Submit.
- Click Download when prompted "Are you sure want to download the application 'sophia.exe'?"
- The 'Keychain Access' will open. Under the drop down menu entitled Keychain, choose System, then click OK.
- You may be asked to enter your Keychain Access Password. Enter the password and click OK.
* Note: This password is not managed by VeriSign nor was it created during the process for the Class 1 Digital ID Certificate.
This is a password controlled and managed by your machine.
- Your certificate is now installed.
To view the certificate in the Keychain Access application:
- Open a 'Finder' and select Application on the left hand column. Then go to Utilities > and double click Keychain Access.
- On the left column under Keychains, select System. Under Category on the left column, select Certificates.
- Double click on the certificate with your name that you had enrolled as and verify that the expiration date is one year from the day you were issued the certificate.
* Note: It is sometimes not possible to install the sophia.exe file because Safari browser is locked down for installing the digital ids.
Therefore, it is required to install the certificate first on the certificate store within the operating system (Mac OSX), import it onto the browser (Safari)
and finally set it up on the corresponding mail client to be used for signing and encrypting.
If the digital id cannot be installed after following the steps outlined above, then the digital id has to be revoked and re-enrolled using a different browser.
